Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum reaffirmed that the country is a free, sovereign, and independent nation, emphasizing that it does not accept external interference. In response to comments made by former President Donald Trump, who stated that he would declare drug cartels as terrorist organizations upon taking office, Sheinbaum highlighted that her government will not tolerate external meddling.

During a conference in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Sheinbaum mentioned that she sent a letter to Trump emphasizing that relations between Mexico and the United States should be based on mutual respect.

The president pointed out that the issue of drug trafficking has complex roots and that a significant portion of the demand for drugs comes from the United States, as well as the trafficking of weapons into Mexico.

Sheinbaum’s statements came after Trump’s remarks at a forum hosted by the ultraconservative organization Turning Point in Phoenix, Arizona. At that event, Trump also claimed that all members of foreign gangs would be expelled from the United States.

The Mexican government has insisted that the United States should address domestic drug demand as a public health issue rather than focusing solely on trafficking across the border. Additionally, some more radical sectors within the Republican Party have called for considering drug traffickers as terrorists and have proposed military interventions in Mexican territory, an idea that the Mexican government has categorically rejected.

Sheinbaum expressed confidence in maintaining a good relationship with the United States, similar to the one President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had with the previous U.S. administration. She affirmed that any necessary discussions would take place either personally or through designated teams.
